Tuesday, September 28, 2021

This is the ride that started the Tuesday Dirt and Pavement Rides! It is a really fun ride with lots of variety. The red colors of the trees in this early foliage season should be bright as we travel alongside the rivers and fields.

This ride will include new pavement, fair pavement, bike path, good dirt roads, good sandy roads, farm roads, mountain views and a covered bridge. The first half of the ride is almost all paved, the second half is almost all dirt roads. With the recent rain the dirt roads should be packed down nicely.

You will like the dirt roads of this ride on wider tires, like those of a hybrid or gravel bike. A mountain bike will work for the ride, but you will enjoy the pavement sections with less knobby tires.

We start at the Saco Valley Fire Station in North Fryeburg, same as usual, and bike south on 113 to Fryeburg Village. We get on the bike path and end up near the airport and follow some nice dirt roads in the tress, then onto Haleytown Road and into Brownfield. After a short easy hill, we end up on dirt roads that take us eventually over the Hemlock Covered Bridge, then Frog Alley along the Old Saco River. Farm roads along the turf fields return us to North Fryeburg. We emerge from the dirt roads onto Old River Road at the junction with McNeil, then about a mile back to the cars via Harbor Road.

This is a really flat ride as compared to our usual adventures. Longer in distance, but flatter, with 915 ft elevation gain in 38 miles!

Total Distance: 38 miles.

Meet: 10:00 am, ready to ride.

Where: Parking area in the park next to the Saco Valley Fire Station in North Fryeburg, on the corner of Route 113 and South Chatham Road. No porta potty, so plan accordingly!

Bring water, snacks and/or lunch to eat - a good lunch spot is at the Hemlock Covered Bridge.

Carpool?  Meet at the scenic vista in Intervale at 8:00 am for carpooling.
