Stone House Road, Shell Pond and Deer Hill Road. 9:30 am

Tuesday, July 16, 2019

This ride is from Joan Kelly's Fat Tire Cruiser Ride Library. It is a great ride, it's time we did this again! It is relatively short with lots of interesting things to see along the way. A good ride for a warm summer day.

This is the ride described in Joan's words:

"This is one of our top three rides it is sooo... beautiful.  Every year the foliage is magnificent and the scenery is spectacular!  Don't miss this ride!!!

This route first loops around Deer Hill on; route 113, Stone House Road, Shell Pond Trail, a bit of Shell Pond Loop Trail and Deer Hill Road. Most of the loop will be on dirt roads or trails. There will be one trail segment that is a bit rough but doable (and quite walkable for those who choose to) especially where we will link up to Deer Hill Road from the Shell Pond area. Then we'll make another loop as we head up to the Bricket Place and on to The Basin for a lunch amid the eye popping scenery. And then it's back to our cars via route 113."

The ride starts on Route 113 near Evans Notch in the Chatham - Stow - Lovell area. The trails are maintained by the Chatham Trails Club. We will be doing most of our ride on old dirt forest roads and some riding on paved Route 113.

A hybrid or mountain bike, or any bike with wide tires will be fine on this expedition. Skinny tired road bikes will not have fun. There are sections where we will leave the bikes and do a very short walk on a hiking tail to view the sights.

Ready to ride at 9:30 am

Total mileage, only about 14 miles, but lots to see here. Some gradual uphills, one hill might be walked - by me.

If you want more miles, start in North Fryeburg at the fire station, usual place, and ride up to meet us at the Baldface Circle Trail parking lot (about 8 miles north on 113).

Bring water and a lunch or snacks.

This ride includes a tour of some spectacular natural features along the way, including Rattlesnake Pool and Rattlesnake Gorge (it's gorgeous, of course), and Shell Pond, then at the end, The Basin.

We’ll start the ride at the Forest Service parking lot for the Baldface Circle Trail which is about 0.10 mi north of the AMC Cold River Camp entrance on the right side of route 113.  It is 5.7 miles north of The Stow Store.

IF you want to car pool, meet at the Scenic Vista parking lot in North Conway, at 8:30 to drive up and over Hurricane Mountain Road, otherwise see you at the trailhead for the Baldface Circle Trail. We should be ready to start the ride at 9:30 am.
